Australia VS Netherlands Victory

The Australian Women’s Basketball team are looking dangerous, defeating the Netherlands in a fantastic match that saw Deakin University student, Cobi Crispin score 10 points, making her the second highest goal scorer for the match.

Men’s Wheelchair Basketball has featured at the Paralympics since the first Games in 1960, with Womens Wheelchair Basketball being introduced at the 1968 Games, making it one of the longest running Women’s events.

Australian Opals play Russia in the Basketball Bronze Medal Final

Sam Richards, Australian Womens Basketball, OpalsHeading into the third quarter against the US with a 4 point lead, the Opals were looking to break the world number one USA’s 39 game winning streak. However the depth of the US team outscored the Aussies in the third and fourth quarters to win the game 86-73, sending the Opals to the final for bronze.

In a rematch of the qualifiers, the Opals will be looking to repeat their 70-66 win over Russia to take home the Bronze. Deakin University Engineering student Sam Richards with 20 assists and 24 points this tournament, will be setting her team up for shots and defending against Russia’s top shooters.

Catch the action live on Foxtel London 7 Sunday morning August 12 at 2am and go to deakin.edu.au/deakin-spirit/ to cheer the Opals on in their chance for a well deserved medal.

Craig Mottram’s 5000m Run in his 4th Consecutive Olympic Games Wednesday, 8th August, 7.45pm on Foxtel London 4

Competing in his fourth consecutive Olympic Games, Craig Mottram, who has previously held the all time Australian record for the Men’s 5000m long distance will compete in the 5000m qualifier against some of the world’s greatest distance runners. Mottram has been on the Australian national team for 11 years.

Henry Frayne competing in the Triple Jump Tuesday, 7th August, 7.45pm on Foxtel London 3.

Recent Deakin University graduate, Henry Frayne, (Bachelor of Commerce) will be competing in the Men’s Triple Jump after placing 9th in Long Jump following his success in qualifying for the final. The Australian Long Jump team was successful with Aussie Long Jumper Mitchell Watt winning the silver medal.

The Triple Jump is Henry’s favoured event, with the qualifying round airing Tuesday, 7th August, 7.45pm on Foxtel London 3.

The Stingers Semi-Final against the US Wednesday, 8th August, 12.30am on Foxtel London 4

The Stingers are still looking dangerous, having won the quarter final against China 18-20 in a nail biting match which saw Australian Holly Lincoln-Smith score with 35 seconds on the clock, forcing the match into overtime. Equal scores during overtime saw the game end in a penalty shoot out, with Australia scoring 4 penalty shots and China scoring 3.

A win in their next match against the US will see the impressive Australian women’s water polo team playing for the gold medal. Rowena Webster will act as centre back for the Stingers in their semi-final against the US on Wednesday, 8th August, 12.30am on Foxtel London 4 and Channel 9.

Rowing for Gold

Elizabeth Patrick will be rowing in the Women’s Eight for gold with the team that was speculated to be almost turned down for the games on a decision by Rowing Australia. The team has consistently performed, placing 3rd in the repechage round, and beating Great Britain and Germany to a place in the final. The final will air on Channel 9 and Foxtel London 7 on Thursday 2nd August, 2012 at 9.30pm AEST. Men’s Double Sculls - Repechage for a chance at the finals

Tom Gibson will be competing in the Men’s double Sculls repechage round for a chance to qualify for the finals. Tom will be rowing with teammate Rod Chisholm on Tuesday and need to place first or second to remain in the games. You can support Tom on Foxtel London 7 from 7.50pm, 31st July, 2012.

Elizabeth Patrick - Repechage round chance

Elizabeth Patrick will appear in the women’s eight repechage round, rowing for Australia after coming second in the heats. Elizabeth, who is Deakin Alumni, having graduated a Bachelor of Applied Science in 2006, will compete as cox, steering her team towards the finish line. The team need to finish in the top two to qualify for the final. You can catch Elizabeth on Foxtel London 7 from 7.50pm, 31st July, 2012.

Aussie Opals fresh off a win 74-58 go head to head against France, 11.15pm on the 30th July, 2012

Fresh off a win against host country Great Britain 74-58, with Aussie Opal and Deakin University student Sam Richards scoring 8 points, the Opals are set to play a prelim round against France at 11.15pm on Foxtel London 3 on the 30th July, 2012.  The Opals are the favourites with a current FIBA ranking of 2nd, while France are ranked 8th.
